When Micah's hair got really long (we just hadn't gotten around to cutting it) I thought he looked quite similar to the wizard Howl Pendragon from Studio Ghibli's Howl's Moving Castle, one of my favorite animes...so why not dress him up as the titular character. Even got a very in-character mopey meltdown at the end lol. Not my best (Micah has gotten harder to dress up nowadays) but still fun. 🏰🔥🌟

11:30 AM at Maroon Bells

This was only a few minutes after my last picture, but the lighting changed so dramatically with the transient clouds, dispersing the light in rays across the mountains.
There are a few hikes in this area, but the scenic lake hike is a must-do! You cross streams and rivers filled with rain-bow trout, walk through Aspen groves and get different and varying views of the mountains that won't want to put your camera down 😄! Other hikes include the Crater Lake Hike, which is about four miles and according to all trails should take about two hours - however, it is a steep hike, so some people would say it takes longer! Another hike is in the opposite direction of the mountains, but is a pleasant jaunt along the Maroon Creek (the hike is called Maroon Creek Trail) through a thick canopy of pine trees. Also in the area are picnic tables and restrooms if you'd like to take a break for lunch! But be cautious of bears!

The mountains fully lit in the background is a striking sight!
If you want to see the Maroon Bells during the Fall season, you need to have a reservation to be able to drive in to the parking lot. If you aren't able to get a reservation, you can get a shuttle from Aspen, but that can get tricky and cause some delays if you're trying to see sunrise (the earliest shuttle is 8am). Some reservations for parking/driving-in open up three days before your desired date at 8am Mountain time - which is what we did. But you must arrive before 8am day of and leave by 4pm. Note that the rules and restrictions seem to change often for this area so some information you find on the internet may not be up to date.

Sunrise at Maroon Bells

The moment the sun touched the tips of the Maroon Bells was right at sunrise, 6:57am. This moment only lasted but five minutes before the colors transformed to another different but striking view (which I'll post later). We went on a Friday morning, which pleasantly wasn't very crowded (I had read that on the weekend, there's absolutely no room to space your camera as there are tripods side to side all along the ropes). The sight was amazing to behold and did not disappoint! I am glad I was able to get a reservation and that the timing worked and that the conditions were perfect and that my son only had a few temper tantrums in the process and my husband was able to entertain him while I took photos.
